A Life of Prayer in Uncertain Times: A Teaching Retreat
What can we learn from the saints about prayer in uncertain times? Join Dr. Bruce Hindmarsh (James M. Houston Professor of Spiritual Theology; Professor of the History of Christianity) for a teaching retreat at the Peace and Spirituality Center in Bellevue, Washington. Bruce will be speaking on “A Life of Prayer in Uncertain Times: Lessons from the Saints”. The retreat takes place Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. The cost is USD 59 per person (or USD 69, lunch included).
The teaching sessions will explore the following topics:
- Gregory the Great: When my world feels like it’s collapsing, how do I follow God?
- Teresa of Avila: How do you find inner freedom when life has become oppressive?
- John Newton: Amazing grace in a broken world.
There will also be a viewing of The Amazing Story of Amazing Grace, a film documenting the life of John Newton. The retreat will conclude with a Q&A time with Bruce.
About the Speaker
Bruce Hindmarsh took his DPhil degree in theology at Oxford University in 1993. From 1995 to 1997 he was also a research fellow at Christ Church, Oxford. He has since published and spoken widely to international audiences on the history of early British evangelicalism.
His articles have appeared in respected academic journals such as Church History, the Journal of Ecclesiastical History, and the Huntington Library Quarterly. He is the author of three major books: John Newton and the English Evangelical Tradition (Oxford University Press, 1996), The Evangelical Conversion Narrative (Oxford University Press, 2005), and The Spirit of Early Evangelicalism (Oxford University Press, 2018). Bruce has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards, research grants and fellowships. He has also been a Mayers Research Fellow at the Huntington Library and a holder of the Henry Luce III Theological Fellowship.
Bruce speaks often to lay audiences and preaches in his own church and beyond. A former staff worker for Youth for Christ and an active lay member of an Anglican Church, he is married to Carolyn, and they have three children: Bethany, Matthew, and Sam.
