10 Poetry Classics You Can't Do Without

This course will introduce ten great poetry classics, spanning over a thousand years, from one of the first Christian poems in English to the last and greatest of Eliot’s Four Quartets. I will help you to understand these poems in the original context in which they were written but more importantly we will explore together what they have come to mean over the centuries and what they can mean for us now. In particular we will look at the ways in which these poems can make available to us new ways of thinking about and imagining the world that may help us navigate the challenging times we live in and engage in fresh ways with the issues of our day, issues of justice and equality, of environmental crisis, and opportunity. The underlying principle of this course is that the poetic imagination is one of the means we have of encountering truth and that truth will set us free. Throughout the course we will be keeping these poems in conversation both with the tenets of our faith and the tenor of our times.
