Marketplace Theology & Ministry
This course aims to help students inhabit a biblical theological vision for life in the marketplace. It will seek to locate an understanding of ministry in the marketplace within the wider context of God’s mission, and the mission and ministry of the church in the world.
During the course, the themes and topic areas we will cover will include:
- Understanding the place of work, business, professional life and enterprise in the purpose of God
- Understanding and practising engagement with the mission of God as it relates to enterprise in the world
- Understanding and appropriating the spiritual sources of entrepreneurial leadership
- Ethical guidelines and perspectives for facing challenging workplace situations
- Understanding the historical and cultural factors that have shaped the modern workplace
- Spiritual disciplines appropriate for marketplace and civic involvement
- Skill in dealing with concrete situations through case studies
- The impact of organizational culture and economic systems
- Grappling with resistance in the workplace
- Developing ministry and service in the marketplace as part of the ministry of the church in the world
Class sessions will consist of a mixture of lectures, small group discussions, case studies and three full days of travelling to various marketplaces and interviewing thoughtful practitioners. Short readings will be assigned for some of these. The format will be interactive and cater to a variety of learning styles.
A soft copy of the “The Readings in Marketplace Theology” will be available to all students. Each day’s lecture notes will be available in soft copy or hard copy from the TA. Where these readings are used each page counts for 2 pages. Weekly lecture notes will be in PowerPoint form and can be printed six to a page as “handouts” or used for teaching others.
