The Sermon on the Mount

What are we to make of the collection sayings in Matthew 5-7 we call “The Sermon on the Mount”? Some have argued that Jesus’ words describe the eschatological Kingdom of God and are, therefore, not relevant to this present age; others argue that the words have relevance only for the immediate period of the middle first century or those alive in the expectation of the imminent end of history; still others argue that the works are either for a special class of “holy” disciples, or are given to drive disciples to their knees before such “exceeding righteousness.” In this course we will work with the presupposition that “the Sermon on the Mount” flows naturally, inherently, from Jesus’ announcement that in Him and because of Him, the Kingdom of God is breaking into the world now (Matthew 4:17; Mark 1:15), and that in His Sermon Jesus is describing what happens when the Kingdom takes hold of a community or individual.
