The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reports that in 2015 there were more people forced to flee their homes and seek refuge than at any other time since records began. During this public lecture, Laurel Borisenko will explore the role of UNHCR in using resettlement to another country as a durable solution to refugee situations while personalizing our understanding of the refugee plight by telling stories from her many years of experience in humanitarian aid. She will conclude by identifying issues related to resettling Syrian refugees in Canada.

Laurel Borisenko has spent more than a decade working in humanitarian aid and complex emergencies around the world. She has held senior management roles in a variety of international NGOs and has worked with UN organizations, providing refugee support, emergency relief, and child protection. Laurel brings first-hand knowledge of both the political and the personal aspects of forced migration.
