Regent College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. George Guthrie as Professor of New Testament, beginning September 2018.

Dr. Guthrie is an internationally recognized New Testament scholar. He comes to Regent from Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, where he is currently the Benjamin W. Perry Professor of Bible. He is a highly sought after lecturer, and has taught across North America, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and Israel. Dr. Guthrie describes his calling as helping church leaders and laypeople learn how to read the Bible well and discipling students in living their whole lives as followers of Christ.

Regent President Dr. Jeffrey Greenman remarked that he is “delighted to have George joining our faculty. He’s a highly respected New Testament scholar who cares deeply for the holistic formation of people and for educating the laity, which is at the heart of Regent’s educational mission. His reputation as a teacher and mentor to students is spoken of highly throughout the academic community. He and his wife, Pat, are known for their warmth, hospitality, and deep care for students, which will be a great blessing to the Regent community.”

Academic Dean Dr. Paul Spilsbury welcomes the appointment as well, stating, “Regent has long been a place where people come to learn from first-class teachers, and George’s appointment carries on that tradition. The depth of research shown in his commentaries and articles is matched by his integrative and personal vision for Christian formation. We are all very excited to have him join us here.”

Dr. Guthrie has published commentaries on Hebrews (Zondervan, 1998), James (Zondervan, 2006), and 2 Corinthians (Baker, 2015), and numerous articles, chapters, and book reviews. He has also published a number of works designed to equip the church to better understand and apply Scripture, including Reader’s Guide to the Bible (LifeWay, 2011), Reading God’s Story: A Chronological Daily Bible (Broadman & Holman, 2011), and Read the Bible for Life: Your Guide to Understanding and Living God’s Word (Broadman & Holman, 2011). He is a founder and Senior Fellow of the Ryan Center for Biblical Studies, an organization committed to promoting faithful and informed Bible reading, study, and interpretation at the grassroots level of the church.  He holds both a PhD and MDiv from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a ThM from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

George and Pat have two grown children, Joshua and Anna.
