Regent College is delighted to announce that Dr. George Guthrie has been appointed to the E. Marshall Sheppard Chair of Biblical Studies.
In response to this appointment, George said, “My colleagues and I are privileged to carry on a rich tradition of teaching the Bible at Regent College, a tradition by which the life of the mind and heart, and life in both the church and the world, are integrated. Therefore, I am deeply thankful for the honour of being named to the Marshall Sheppard chair, which embodies Regent’s deep commitment to the robust encounter of the Bible as at the heart of our mission.”
The man for whom the Chair is named, Marshall Sheppard, was a key figure and leader in the founding of Regent College. He passed away in 1973, and was honoured by Regent College with its first named Chair, the E. Marshall Sheppard Chair of Biblical Studies. Previous incumbents of the Sheppard chair include Dr. Ward Gasque, Dr. Bruce Waltke, and Dr. Iain Provan.
Regent President Paul Spilsbury said, “Dr. George Guthrie is a highly respected and valued member of the Regent College faculty. His biblical scholarship is recognized by academics, pastors, and lay readers around the world, and his insightful teaching is greatly appreciated by our students. George is a man of deep personal faith with a profound concern for the spiritual growth and well-being of everyone he encounters. He and his wife Pat have become an integral part of the Regent College community, and their love for students is evidenced by their open-hearted generosity and hospitality. I am delighted that George has been appointed to the Sheppard chair, and I look forward to his ongoing ministry with us in the years to come.”
