Degree and grade requirements for admission
These are the minimum requirements in order to be admitted to one of our programs.
Graduate Diploma in
Christian Studies
Master of Arts in Theological Studies
Master of Divinity
- an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
- a minimum grade point average of 2.8 on a scale of 4.0 (or equivalent)
Master of Theology
- a 60-credit-hour master’s degree in theological studies such as an MA in Theological Studies, MDiv, or equivalent degree from an accredited institution
- a minimum grade point average of 3.3 out of 4.0 in the preceding master’s program
Mature students
If you have not obtained a bachelor’s degree, you may apply as a mature student. You will need to:- be at least 28 years of age
- specify in your application as to how your life/work/ministry/educational experience can be seen as equivalent to a university education
- submit a book review on an English-language book selected from the Book Review Reading List (see #8 in Application Documents below)
Non-accredited degree students
You hold a degree but it's from a non-accredited school. You will need to:- submit a sample research paper (see #7 in Application Documents below)
Application documents
- Application form: Apply online. (For an application package in paper form, email us or call 1.800.663.8664 or 604.224.3245.)
- Application fee: CAD 60 (USD 50), non-refundable. A further $20 (CAD or USD) may be charged for late applications (see Deadlines). Applications will not be processed until payment is received. Payments may be made in the following formats:
- Canadian or US cash or traveller’s cheques (if paying in person)
- cheque drawn on a Canadian or US bank account
- Canadian or US bank or postal money orders
- credit card (Visa or MasterCard): please ensure that you provide your credit card details on our secured payment site after submitting your online application.
- Personal statement: Describe your experience, personal journey of faith, and educational goals (approx. 1,000 words). For mature student status, specify how your life/work/ministry/educational experience can be seen as equivalent to a university education.
- Official transcripts: Transcripts should be sent directly from all institutions of higher education attended, whether or not you earned a degree. Transcripts in a language other than English must be accompanied by an official English translation.

Two Letters of Recommendation: Submitted directly to the Admissions
Office on an online reference form (once you submit your online application and provide the names of your referees, each referee will receive a link to an online reference form and will submit that directly to us):
- an academic reference attesting to your academic performance and capacity for graduate work, and
- a character reference attesting to your facility in interpersonal relationships, social sensitivity, and other character traits. - TOEFL exam: Official results (including the essay or TWE) are required if you speak English as a second language. See English language requirements
- Sample research paper: for non-accredited degree category only (10–12 pages).
- Writing sample: for all those applying for admission in the mature category. This should be a 1,000-word, double-spaced book review on an English-language book selected from the Book Review Reading List . It should interact with the author’s ideas and not just report on them. There should be no outside proofreading. (1,000 words, double-spaced)
Master of Theology
- All documents listed above.
- Additional ThM Program Application (external)
- Sample research paper in area of intended study (12–15 pages).
Applying from the MA (Theo. Studies) or MDiv into the ThM
Students currently in the MA in Theological Studies (formerly the MCS) or MDiv program at Regent who are nearing completion may apply to the ThM program by submitting the following:
- an ThM Program Application (internal)
- a sample research paper (10– 12 pages)
- a $25 ($20 US) application fee
- a ThM Reference Form completed by two faculty members (forwarded to the Admissions Office).
Students will have to fulfill the ThM degree requirements as stated in the Academic Catalogue that is current at the time of admission.
English language requirements
If English is not your birth/native language, you will need to demonstrate English proficiency at a graduate level. This requirement also applies to applicants who are citizens or long-term residents of English-speaking countries, or who have attended English-speaking universities and colleges. Proficiency is usually demonstrated through a TOEFL score.
Our TOEFL requirement may seem strict, but it's in your best interest! Our standards for English comprehension and writing are rigorous, and we wouldn't want you struggling in our courses. If you believe you qualify for an exemption from this requirement, please contact your Admissions Counsellor.

If you need to submit a TOEFL score and have not yet taken this test, you should plan to do so now as part of your application process. Since tests are offered only a limited number of times each year, and some countries have long waiting lists, it is vital to register well in advance for a test date. Once the test is written, it can take up to six weeks for the results to be sent to Regent. Application decisions cannot be made until TOEFL scores have arrived.
Scores are valid for a maximum of two years.
Our admissions policies
We encourage men and women of any race, colour, national or ethnic origin, and denomination to apply for our programs. We also welcome students with disabilities—our campus is fully accessible to students in wheelchairs. We then select from a variety of factors in addition to strong academic performance, such as employment history, voluntary activities, and creative pursuits.
The normal prerequisite for study is an accredited bachelor’s degree. We are aware, however, that some students may not have a bachelor’s degree, yet have the interest and ability to study at the graduate level. If this is the case, we encourage you to apply as a mature student.
If you’re unsure about applying for a program, but want to start off by taking some courses, you can do so as an unclassified student.
What type of applicant are you?
Our application form asks you to specify what type of applicant you are. This chart will help you figure this out.
* The
accrediting body to which the College belongs (the Association of Theological
Schools) limits the portion of our students that may be admitted as mature or
non-accredited degree students. We assess the applications according to the
availability of space and the relative merits of each case.

This is a temporary designation only. As an unclassified
student, once you complete 12 credits of courses, you must apply for admission
to a Regent program if you wish to take more courses. Note that students
admitted to a program are given priority in classes where space is limited. If
you’re coming from outside of Canada as an Unclassified Student, and you plan
to study for less than six months, you may not require a study permit. Contact
the Assistant Dean of Students for details.
Categories of admission
If you are admitted to Regent College, you will be admitted under one of the following three categories:
- Unconditional Admission: All requirements have been met.
- Conditional Admission: Under special circumstances, you may be admitted while certain official documents are still outstanding. The outstanding documents must be sent to us as soon as possible. Once we receive the outstanding documents and evaluate them to be satisfactory, we change your conditional admission to unconditional admission. If we do not receive the outstanding documents within one year of your start term, we will place a hold on your account and you will not be able to register for any courses. Please note that we do not grant conditional admission for outstanding English language requirements or, in some cases, incomplete transcripts.
- Probationary Admission: Under exceptional circumstances, you may be granted probationary admission despite an academic record below normal entrance requirements. If you are admitted in this category, you can register for a maximum of 9 credits in your first term, and must take the non-credit Academic Writing course (GENR 311). We will remove your probationary status on the condition that you earn the minimum entrance grade point average requirement in your first 9 credits. If you do not earn the required grades, we will withdraw the probationary admission. Please note that we do not grant probationary admission to students coming from outside of North America.
If you fall below the minimum, you will be notified that you have been put on academic probation for the following term. If you fall substantially below the minimum, you may be dismissed from the College without probation.
