New Student's Guide to the U-Pass
Step-by-step instructions for getting started with the BC U-Pass program, which gives Regent students unlimited, affordable access to public transit in the Metro Vancouver area.
If you're a new credit student at Regent, you'll need to obtain a Campus Wide Login (your online account with the University of British Columbia), a UBCcard (UBC student ID), and a Compass Card (reloadable transit pass). Follow the step-by-step instructions below to get started.
For general information about the U-Pass program, including eligibility and exemption criteria, please see our main U-Pass page.
Find Your UBC ID
Regent College is an affiliate of the University of British Columbia. As a Regent student, you are automatically assigned a UBC ID number. You will need your UBC ID number to create a CWL.
You can find your UBC ID in REGIS. After you login, look at the bottom of the column containing your profile information. Your UBC ID is an 8-digit number.
Set Up Your CWL
Follow these steps to set up your Affiliate CWL. (If you are a UBC alum, please see this additional information before you get started.)
-
Close any UBC webpages that are open on your device.
-
Go to the Affiliate section of UBC's How to Create an Account page and review the criteria for your CWL Login Name, Password, and Security Questions.
-
Under Step 2 on the How to Create an Account page, click on the CWL Account Upgrader link.
-
You'll be offered a variety of ways to log in. Select Login with SecureLink.
-
On the next screen, select Student, Applicant, External Student Portal.
-
Enter the email address associated with your REGIS account, your 8-digit UBC ID (called "Student Number" on this form), and the Captcha code.
-
Check your email for a message from "UBC Identity Broker (SecureLink) <[email protected]>" and follow the link provided.
-
Note: You must open this link (a) within 15 minutes and (b) in the same browser window you used to request the link. If you don't open the link in time, you can fill out the form again to request a new one.
-
-
Follow the prompts and on-screen instructions and verify your email address.
-
Select your CWL Login Name, Password, and Security Questions, and click Finish to complete.
Request a UBCcard
Once you have a CWL, you can submit a UBCcard request via UBCcard Online Services. Once your UBCcard has been printed by UBC, you will immediately be able to load your U-Pass online.
Get a Compass Card
A Compass Card is a durable, re-loadable electronic fare card that you will load your U-Pass onto each month. Whenever you ride a bus or SkyTrain, you simply tap your Compass Card to get on board.
If you don't already have a Compass Card, you can pick one up from various locations around Vancouver, including the UBC bookstore, for a $6 deposit. (TransLink has a map of Compass card vendors on its website.)
Link Your U-Pass and Compass Card
Before using your U-Pass for the first time, you need to link it to your Compass Card.
- Go to the U-Pass BC site.
- Select UBC as your school.
- Enter your CWL login and password.
- Link your Compass Card using the 20-digit card number and 3-digit verification number on the back of the Compass Card.
Note: You'll need to repeat this process if you ever have to replace your Compass Card.
Load Your U-Pass (Monthly)
Once you’ve linked your Compass Card, you’ll need to load your U-Pass for each month.
- You can load the next month’s U-Pass any time on or after the 16th of the month (e.g., you can link September’s U-Pass starting August 16).
- It can take up to two days for your pass to register on your card, so load next month’s pass early!
