Advanced Readings in Theology and the Arts (Seminar)
Course Description
Christians have been doing serious theological thinking in and through the arts for millennia, but a more focused study of “theology and the arts” has burgeoned over the past century. The aim of this course is to facilitate in-depth engagement with some of the key thinkers, texts, and issues that have shaped this field over the past 100 years. Specifically, this course has three aims. First, we will conduct a broad mapping of this field, familiarizing ourselves with a diversity of approaches and streams of thought, including examples from Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant perspectives. Second, we will carefully read and discuss several major texts, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for further development. Third, over the semester, each student will engage two of these texts through writing and presentation. Whereas other courses in Regent’s Christianity and the Arts program are focused on interacting with artworks, this course will be more theoretical and text-focused, developing the breadth and depth of intellectual resources that students have available for their own artistic or scholarly pursuits.
This course has a maximum enrollment of 12 students.
To get into a priority enrollment course, you must register by the early registration deadline (see Important Dates) and must submit a Priority Enrollment Course Request (available through the "Additional Registration Requests" section of the Registration menu in REGIS) after completing your registration. Class lists will be determined within a week after the early registration deadline, and you will be notified by email shortly thereafter. First priority will be given to students who need a course for the program to which they have been admitted, and who have registered by the early registration deadline.
