Video | The Seventh Seal: Kierkegaard's Knight of Faith
This video essay places Ingmar Bergman’s classic film, The Seventh Seal, under a Kierkegaardian lens. In doing so, it suggests that a person’s confrontations with death and religious doubt constitute the very conditions under which they might exercise faith in a world seemingly devoid of God.
What does it mean to have faith? This video essay attempts to hear some of the Kierkegaardian resonances in Ingmar Bergman’s classic film, The Seventh Seal. In particular, it pays attention to the ways in which the film’s protagonist, Antonius Block, inhabits the Kierkegaardian figure of a knight of faith—a person who, instead of resigning before the absurd, confronts it in an act of faith. On this account, death, doubt, and suffering are not roadblocks to faith but the very conditions for its development.
