Call to Worship

Jesus began his ministry to the world,
led by the Spirit into the wilderness.
As we continue our Lenten journey,
even into uncomfortable places.
Let us be led by the Spirit…
As we seek to follow Jesus,
we walk the long, slow path of endurance.
Let us be led by the Spirit,
As we persevere on our path to faithfulness,
though we may grow tired and weary,
Let us be led by the Spirit,
Jesus left the wilderness,
faithful and obedient to God,
rejoicing in the One in whom he trusted.
May we be led by our Christ,
and rejoice in the Lord our God. Amen.

Before the Throne of God Above

Lyrics: Charitie Lees Bancroft | Tune (“Before The Throne”): Vikki Cook

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on his hands
My name is written on his heart
I know that while in heaven he stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart

When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see him there
Who made an end to all my sin
Because the sinless Saviour died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied
To look on him and pardon me
To look on him and pardon me

Behold him there the Risen Lamb
My perfect spotless righteousness
The great unchangeable I Am
The King of glory and of grace
One with himself I cannot die
My soul is purchased by his blood
My life is hid with Christ on high
With Christ my Saviour and my God
With Christ my Saviour and my God

I bow before the cross of Christ
And marvel at this love divine
God’s perfect Son was sacrificed
To make me righteous in God’s eyes
This river’s depths I cannot know
But I can glory in its flood
The Lord Most High has bowed down low
And poured on me his glorious love
And poured on me his glorious love

Abide with Me

Henry Francis Lyte, William Henry Monk, and Justin Smith. Arrangement: Andres Perez.

Abide with me fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens Lord with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless abide with me

I need Thy presence ev’ry passing hour
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
Who like Thyself my Guide and Stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, abide with me

I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness
Where is death’s sting, where grave thy victory
I triumph still if Thou abide with me

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
As morning breaks and earth’s vain shadows flee
In life in death, Lord abide with me

Scripture | Matthew 4:1-11; 1 Kings 19:1-5 (NRSV)

Matthew 4:1-11
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’” Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

1 Kings 19:1-5
Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life like the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.” Then he was afraid; he got up and fled for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongs to Judah; he left his servant there. But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, “Get up and eat.”
