Summer Courses

About

Regent College is a place where many paths cross.

Regent students come from all over the world, from diverse backgrounds, and from a wide range of church traditions. We take various pathways through our programs, studying full-time or part-time, on campus and online. We celebrate the differences that make us unique, and we rejoice in our unity as God’s people, called into community.

Where we go from here varies just as much as where we came from. We go out with new experiences, new insights, new friends to travel with. We follow paths both familiar and unknown, wherever God leads us. Because Regent isn’t the end of the journey. It’s just the beginning.

Are you ready for a new journey? We would love to welcome you here!

Christian Faith & Mental Health Care

Good mental health care is critically important, but modern medical models often target symptoms without addressing our relationships, stories, or deepest longings. Adopting a theological vision of human beings as wayfarers on a journey to God, this course explores how Christians can draw on the best insights of both theology and psychiatry to accompany people living with depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, dementia, and other mental health challenges.

Cultural Intelligence for a Changing Church

North American society—and the demographics of the North American church—are changing fast. Churches and ministries need cultural intelligence to meet the needs of those they are called to serve. Yet North American evangelicalism throws up many barriers to the development of multiethnic churches. In this course we’ll use insights from socio-cultural exegesis and theological reflection to begin the practice of developing culturally intelligent communities.

Imagination & Spiritual Formation

The imagination is central to our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. In this course, we’ll look at how Christians have historically trained their imaginations, and we’ll consider how stories, symbols, art, and architecture can form our beliefs, practices, and character. Along the way we’ll meet unicorns, dragons, multi-coloured panthers, and many-headed beasts—and discover how all of them can teach us something about our faith.

The Psalms: Pathways for Spiritual Formation

What happens when we pray the Psalms? In this course, we’ll look at how the Book of Psalms contributes to the spiritual formation of Christians who prayerfully engage with it. In addition to learning from Christian writers through the centuries, we’ll consider insights from modern research into how texts affect their readers. Together, we’ll expand our understanding of how the Spirit works through the word in our lives.

A Biblical Theology of Race & Ethnicity

What does the Bible have to say about race and ethnicity? In this course, we’ll examine various biblical texts and themes that speak to differences and commonalities among human beings. As we explore how the Scriptures can and should inform our concepts of race and ethnicity, we will consider how biblical theology provides resources for confronting racism, xenophobia, and ethnocentrism in our own contexts.

Palestinian Theology in Context

Taught by a Palestinian Evangelical Christian, this course is for all who seek to understand Scripture from a Christ-centred point of view. After unpacking some of the big questions of theology in the Palestinian context, this course offers theological reflections on major theopolitical concerns, including theology of the land, the Zionist project, war and peace, and the relationship between the Old and New Testaments.

The summer course I took reminded me that asking questions and wrestling with complex issues is not a threat to faith but an expression of it. I was able not only to deepen my knowledge of Scripture, but also to connect with others who are passionate about learning and living out God’s word.”
