Student Loans
Regent students from Canada and the United States are eligible for government student loans.
This page has recently been updated. Please note that these updates do NOT reflect changes to
Regent's financial aid or student loan policies, but relate solely to the the format of
this section of the website.
Please be sure to review all information provided by government sources, as policies may occasionally change.
Canada Student Loans
For studies beginning in September, applications should be made by May or June, as the process normally takes six to eight weeks.

Eligibility
You must enroll in a minimum of 9 credit hours per term over the loan period. Loans are available for the Fall and Winter terms only. Being on academic probation may affect eligibility.
How to Apply
If you're a BC resident, you can apply for student loans through the StudentAid BC website.
If you're a Canadian from outside BC, you can apply for student loans through the province where you have lived for a minimum of twelve consecutive months, excluding time spent in full-time studies. Search for your province here.
Please Note: Regent's Financial Aid Officer is the only person authorized to sign your loan forms. Please contact Reception to make an appointment. Students who are unable to visit Regent’s campus should email [email protected] for specific instructions to complete the process without an in-person meeting.
US Student Loans
For studies beginning in September, applications should be made by May or June, as the process normally takes six to eight weeks.
Note: US loans cannot be set up until after June 15 each year.

Note, however, that students applying for US loans to attend a school outside the United States are subject to specific regulations that may not be reflected in all site content. Please be sure to follow the instructions provided below to ensure the completion of all the steps involved in setting up a loan for your Regent studies.
Eligibility
You must be registered in a minimum of 6 on-campus credit hours per term. Funding is generally only available for Fall and Winter terms, although you may be able to get funding for Summer term under certain circumstances. Being on academic probation may affect eligibility.
Note: You are not permitted to take any courses through Distance Education while receiving a US Student Loan. Contact the Financial Aid Officer for details.
Amount of Funding Available
As a US citizen, you may apply for unsubsidized Stafford student loans only, as of July 1, 2012. Graduate students are eligible for as much as $20,500 (USD) in unsubsidized loans. Unsubsidized loans accrue interest while you’re in school, although you can choose to pay it.
Graduate students are also eligible to apply for a Graduate Plus loan (subject to a credit check). The loan amount you are eligible to receive for the academic year is determined by the school, based on your cost of attendance and the amount of your Stafford loan.
The only private loan currently available to students at a foreign school is the Smart Loan from Sallie Mae. To apply for a private loan, you must apply directly to the lender and then send a copy of your signed Promissory Note to Regent’s Financial Aid Officer.
How to Apply
Please be sure to follow these steps carefully. You’re welcome to contact [email protected] if you have any questions about how Regent handles US student loans.
- Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, available online.
- To prevent delays in the application process, be sure to complete all questions fully.
- In “Section H: Information Release,” the school code for Regent College is G10675.
- Fill out the Master Promissory Note.
- If this is your first loan at Regent College, you will need to do Entrance Counselling.
- Complete the US Student Loan Checklist and return it to Regent's Financial Aid Officer.
- Once the Financial Aid Officer at Regent receives this information, the Officer will process the loan and let you know how much you will receive and when. The money will be put into your student account. Cheques will then be cut for the balance of the loan minus the tuition and fees. Please note that the disbursement date is the date that the funds can be requested by the school. It can take up to a week for the funds to transfer to the school's bank account and then to your student account. You will receive notification when the balance is available to be picked up.
- The application process may take up to eight weeks.
