Historically, the dominant paradigm of evangelical Christian community and mission in the public square has often been one of domination and conquest, specifically in contexts where Christianity has held cultural acceptance. Too often, Christian communities can be a part of the narratives of exclusion and injustice rather than champions of the common good. I will argue that dominance occurs due to misunderstanding and misrepresentation of the Gospel, and to the obligation it places upon those who believe. As authentic Christian community in the public square bears the “Good News of God,” the “fruit” of which is “the common good,” the Gospel invites us to turn to joyful testimony and witness, as salt and light.

The Rt. Rev. Dr.  David Zac Niringiye is a theologian, pastor, Bible teacher, organizational development consultant, and activitist. He retired from his work as Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala in 2012 to focus on the pursuit of peace and social-political justice in Uganda.

This lecture is part of our 2018 Summer Evening Public Lecture series.

Dr. Niringiye will be teaching the class "The Gospel & The Common Good" from May 28 – June 1, 2018 as part of our 2018 Summer Programs. Learn more at rgnt.net/summer.
