The Houston Centre invites you to join us at 1 pm on Thursday, May 15, for a public lecture with Dr. Drew Leder: “(Human) Being in a Body: On Illness, Aging, and Healing.”

About the Event

In this lecture, Dr. Drew Leder will propose that to be embodied is also to be susceptible to illness, injury, aging, and other challenges. But he will also explore how people “heal”—become existentially whole—even in the face of such adversities. There turns out to be a whole chessboard of different strategies people employ when one's life, and body, start to fall apart.

About the Speaker

Drew Leder has blended an unusual array of interests and accomplishments in scholarly and “public” philosophy. He is a full professor teaching Western and Eastern Philosophy at Loyola University Maryland, residing in Baltimore. He has an MD from Yale University School of Medicine, as well as a PhD in philosophy from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

His books include The Healing Body: Creative Responses to Illness, Aging and Affliction ‎(Northwestern University Press, 2023), The Distressed Body: Rethinking Illness, Imprisonment, and Healing (University of Chicago Press, 2016), and The Absent Body (University of Chicago Press, 1990), among others.

Location
The Wall Collaboration Centre | 6331 Crescent Road, Vancouver, BC
