The Necessity of a Lament from the People
Jul 8, 2026
For many churches, the easiest response to suffering, pain, and crisis is to run away and hide. But this isn't what God calls his people to do. Theologian Soong-Chan Rah looks at a more appropriate response: lament.
In this lecture, theologian Soong-Chan Rah examines lament as an appropriate theological, liturgical, spiritual, and ecclesial response to the social realities of suffering and crisis. Drawing on both his study of the Book of Lamentations and his pastoral experience, he argues that this response is both deeply countercultural and desperately needed in North American churches steeped in a culture of triumphalism.
