Meditation | Psalm 90

Kate Bluett, Paul Zach, 2021. Used with permission.

Guiding Liturgy

You, O Lord, have formed us from the dust.
Glory to God in the highest!
We have sinned and forgotten that we are dust.
    Lord, have mercy.
We receive your grace and remember that we are dust.
Glory to God in the highest!

O Breath of Life

Lyrics: Bessie Porter Head | Tune (“Spiritus Vitae”): Mary Jane Hammond

O Breath of Life come sweeping through us
Revive thy church with life and power
O Breath of Life come cleanse, renew us
And fit your church to meet this hour

O Wind of God come bend us, break us
Till humbly we confess our need
Then in thy tenderness remake us
Revive, restore for this we plead

O Breath of Love come breathe within us
Renewing thought and will and heart
Come love of Christ afresh to win us
Revive thy church in every part

O heart of Christ once broken for us
Tis there we find our strength and rest
Our broken contrite hearts now solace
And let your waiting church be blest

Revive us Lord! Is zeal abating
While harvest fields are vast and white?
Revive us Lord the world is waiting
Equip thy church to spread the light

Orientation:1 | We are Dust

You, O Lord, have formed us from the dust.
Glory to God in the highest!

The Genesis Story | God’s Creation of Humanity

Genesis 1:26; 2:7,15,21-22,25 (NRSV)

Corporate Response

The Lord forms us from the things of earth.
We are dust, held together by his sustaining hand.
The Lord breathes his life-giving breath into us.
We are dust. Apart from him we have no life.
From the beginning, we are his creatures.
From the beginning, we depend on Him, our Creator and Sustainer.
All praise to the Lord our Maker, for he is faithful and good.

The Lord makes us in his image.
We are dust, held together by his sustaining hand.
The Lord has placed us within his cherished creation,
to keep it and to cultivate it.
We are dust, given life by the Lord for his glory and his purposes.

O Lord, we are yours.
We did not make ourselves. It is you who made us.
For it was you who formed our inward parts;
You knit us together in our mother’s wombs.
We praise you, for we are fearfully and wonderfully made

Great Are You Lord

Jason Ingram, Leslie Jordan, David Leonard © 2012

You give life, you are love, you bring light to the darkness
You give hope, you restore ev’ry heart that is broken
Great are you Lord

It’s your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise, we pour out our praise
It’s your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to you only

All the earth will shout your praise
Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing,
“Great are you Lord”

Scripture | Psalm 103:13-18

As a father has compassion for his children,
so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him.
For he knows how we were made;
he remembers that we are dust.

As for mortals, their days are like grass;
    they flourish like a flower of the field;
for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
and its place knows it no more.
But the steadfast love of the LORD
is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children’s children,
to those who keep his covenant
and remember to do his commandments.

Disorientation: 2 | We have Forgotten We are Dust

You, O Lord, have formed us from the dust.
Glory to God in the highest!
We have sinned and forgotten that we are dust.
    Lord, have mercy.

The Genesis Story | The fall of true humanity

Genesis 2:16-17, 3:1-13, 17-19 (NRSV)

Corporate Response

Heavenly Father, we hear the story of Adam and Eve,
and we perceive how much we are like them.
We have failed to live according to your word.
Instead, we have bought into the crafty words
of serpent-voices that would lead us away
   from your wise direction.
We have forgotten our dignified place in the world you have made.
We have forgotten that we depend on you for life.
We have forgotten that we are dust.

As we make our confession before you,
give us eyes to see our waywardness
so that our repentance is honest and heartfelt. Amen.

Lord, Lord, Lord

Ryan Flanigan | © 2018 Common Hymnal Digital

Lord, Lord, Lord please restore our trust
We've lost our way, Lord, we've strayed from love
We broken vows, we've wasted breath
We've stolen life, we've tasted death

Lamb of God take away our sin
   Have mercy, have mercy
   Jesus Christ, holy sacrifice
Have mercy, have mercy on us

Lord, Lord, Lord please restore our trust
We've lost our way, Lord, we've strayed from love
We’ve broken vows, we've wasted breath
We've stolen life, we've tasted death

We need you now to forgive our sin
Replace our stone hearts with flesh again
Undo the curse, and heal our faith
Unleash your power, Lord, come and save

Scripture | Hebrews 4:14-16(NRSV)

Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Litany of Penitence

Most holy and merciful Father: We confess to you and to one another, and to the whole communion of saints in heaven and on earth, that we have sinned by our own fault in thought, word, and deed; by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and strength. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We have not forgiven others, as we have been forgiven.
Have mercy on us, Lord.

We have been deaf to your call to serve, as Christ served us. We have not been true to the mind of Christ.
We have grieved your Holy Spirit.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
We confess to you, Lord, all our past unfaithfulness: the pride, hypocrisy, and impatience of our lives,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation of other people,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our anger at our own frustration, and our envy of those more fortunate than ourselves,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts, and our dishonesty in daily life and work,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our negligence in prayer and worship, and our failure to commend the faith that is in us,
We confess to you, Lord.
Accept our repentance, Lord, for the wrongs we have done: for our blindness to human need and suffering, and our indifference to injustice and cruelty,
Accept our repentance, Lord.
For all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward our neighbours, and for our prejudice and contempt toward those who differ from us,
Accept our repentance, Lord.
For our waste and pollution of your creation,
and our lack of concern for those who come after us,
Accept our repentance, Lord.
Restore us, good Lord, and let your anger
depart from us;
Favourably hear us, for your mercy is great.
Accomplish in us the work of your salvation,
That we may show forth your glory in the world.
By the cross and passion of your Son our Lord,
Bring us with all your saints to the joy of his resurrection.

Now and At the Hour

© 2015 David Gungor, John Arndt

O Spirit of God, speak your peace, speak your peace
O Spirit of God, speak your peace, speak your peace
Now and at the hour of our death, amen, amen
Now and at the hour of our death, amen

O merciful God, forgive us, forgive us
O merciful God, forgive us, forgive us
For all the things we have done and left undone
For all the things we have done and left undone

O Son of God, rescue us, rescue us
O Son of God, rescue us, rescue us
Now and at the hour of our death, amen, amen
Now and at the hour of our death, amen

Declaration of Forgiveness

Our Lord, Jesus Christ, we praise you,
for you are gracious and compassionate.
Though our sins bore the sting of death,
through you, God has given us victory over death.
Because of your saving work on the cross,
our sins have been forgiven.
We praise you gratefully as we remember the psalmist’s words:
The LORD is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always accuse,
nor will he keep his anger forever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
   so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far he removes our transgressions from us.
As a father has compassion for his children,
so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him.
For he knows how we were made;
he remembers that we are dust.

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Lyrics: Robert Robinson, Martin Madan | Tune (“Nettleton”): unknown (first published by John Wyeth)

Come Thou fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise His name I’m fixed upon it
The name of God’s redeeming love

Hitherto Thy love has blest me
Thou hast brought me to this place
And I know Thy hand will bring me
Safely home by Thy good grace
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Bought me with His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be
Let Thy goodness like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart O take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Reorientation: 3 | We Remember We are Dust

You, O Lord, have formed us from the dust.
Glory to God in the highest!
We have sinned and forgotten that we are dust.
    Lord, have mercy.
We receive your grace and remember that we are dust.
Glory to God in the highest!

Dust We Are and Shall Return (Beautiful Things)

Dust We Are and Shall Return: © 2015 David Gungor, John Arndt
Beautiful Things: © 2009 Lisa Gungor, Michael Gungor

From dust we've come and dust we are and shall return
Be still my soul and let it go, just let it go

Glory to God, glory to God in the highest
Glory to God, glory to God in the highest

Naked we came and shall return into the grave
Be still my soul and let it go, just let it go

Be still my soul, Lord make me whole, Lord make me whole
Be still my soul, Lord make me whole, Lord make me whole

You make me new, you are making me new (Repeat)

You make beautiful things, you make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things, you make beautiful things out of us

Supplication: 4 | We seek after holiness

Scripture | Isaiah 58:6-8

Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of injustice,
to undo the thongs of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
   and to break every yoke?
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
   and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover them,
and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
   and your healing shall spring up quickly;
your vindicator shall go before you,
the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

O Love That Will Not Let Me Go

Lyrics: George Matheson | Tune: Christopher Miner

O Love that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee
I give thee back the life I owe
That in thine ocean depths its flow may richer fuller be

O Light that follow'st all my way, I yield my flickering torch to thee
My heart restores its borrowed ray
That in thy sunshine's blaze its day may brighter fairer be

O Joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to thee
I trace the rainbow through the rain
And feel the promise is not vain – that morn shall tearless be

O Cross that liftest up my head, I dare not ask to fly from thee
I lay in dust life's glory dead
And from the ground there blossoms red life that shall endless be
