Michael J. Gorman
About
Michael J. Gorman holds the Raymond E. Brown Chair in Biblical Studies and Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary & University in Baltimore, Maryland. He has been teaching at St. Mary’s since 1991. He served as the Dean of St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute from 1995 to 2012.
A specialist in Pauline and Johannine writings, Dr. Gorman has published twenty books, including ten on Paul. His forthcoming commentary on Philippians complements commentaries on Romans and 1 Corinthians, as well as Cruciformity: Paul’s Narrative Spirituality of the Cross (Eerdmans, 2001); Participating in Christ: Explorations in Paul's Theology and Spirituality (Baker Academic, 2019); Becoming the Gospel: Paul, Participation, and Mission (Eerdmans, 2015); and Reading Paul (Wipf & Stock, 2008). His other books include Abide and Go: Missional Theosis in the Gospel of John (Wipf & Stock, 2018); Reading Revelation Responsibly (Wipf & Stock, 2011); and Elements of Biblical Exegesis (3rd ed.; Baker Academic, 2020). In early 2026, he will publish Life Transfigured: A Contemporary Pauline Theology (Eerdmans) and Paul and John in Harmony: A Theological and Historical Exploration (Baker Academic).
Active in their Methodist church, Dr. Gorman and his wife Nancy have held an ecumenical Bible study and prayer gathering in their home for more than thirty years.
