Associate Curator of the Dal Schindell Gallery
Part-time, (up to 20 hours per week), Permanent
The Associate Curator position is responsible for the curation, programming, and day-to-day activities of the Dal Schindell Gallery, with the aim of expanding and enriching the artistic life of Regent College and the broader Vancouver area. Reporting to, and working closely with, the head of the Theology and the Arts program at Regent College, the Associate Curator is expected to coordinate all operations of the Gallery, including organizing and installing high-quality exhibitions, coordinating all promotional efforts for the gallery, interfacing with past and potential artists, maintaining the College’s permanent collection, and programming all events associated with the gallery (opening receptions, artist talks, etc.).
The hourly rate for this position is $26.50/hr.
Flexible hours with evening and weekend work required.
Responsibilities
The Associate Curator of the Dal Schindell Gallery will provide creative and administrative support to the operations of the Gallery in the following ways:
Exhibitions
- In consultation (or collaboration) with the Supervisor, develop the Gallery’s exhibition schedule (usually 5–7 shows per year), including artist selection, concept development, and interpretive framing.
- Coordinate and oversee all exhibition logistics, contracts, expenses, timelines, and checklists.
- Collaborate with Regent’s Communications team to develop the content, design, and distribution of all promotional materials related to each exhibition. This will require proactive, timely, and efficient coordination with artists and the Comms team.
- Collaborate with each artist to edit and/or write all public facing interpretive materials included in each exhibition, including exhibition descriptions, wall texts, exhibition guides, etc.
- Coordinate the installation of each exhibition in ways that meet professional standards of installation, lighting, and presentation of interpretive materials.
- Keep the Dal Schindell Gallery website continually updated and organized, creating new pages to promote each current and upcoming exhibition while archiving past exhibitions.
- Promote the activities of the Gallery through semiregular social media posts and distribution of other promotional materials.
- Research, recruit, and engage potential artists (or arts organizations) for future exhibitions.
Programming
- Plan and coordinate all events associated with the Gallery, including opening receptions, artist talks, and occasional other gatherings.
- Participate in opening receptions, panels, and public programs as needed.
Permanent Collection
- Ensure the proper installation, display, labeling, documentation, conservation, and storage of all art objects in Regent’s art collection, including those owned by and on loan to the College.
- In collaboration with the Supervisor, support the coordination of any new acquisitions, loans, deaccessions, and provenance research in accordance with institutional policies.
- Maintain accurate and thorough records of everything in the collection, using the dedicated collections management system(s).
- Update, edit, or create wall texts and other public-facing materials as needed.
- Conduct research on objects, artists, and themes related to the collection as needed.
Administrative
- Serve on the Arts Advisory Committee, including attending and contributing to meetings twice per semester, or as needed.
- Supervise the Gallery Student Employee (SE) and any project-based installers.
- Other administrative duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required
- Understand and support the ethos and mission of Regent College as articulated in the Mission, Values & Theological Position.
- Undergraduate degree in visual art, art history, museum studies, or a related field, with some level of professional experience in the visual arts.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, including attention to detail, good time management, consistency in meeting deadlines, proactivity to quickly address issues, ability to plan well and anticipate needs, and fastidious organization of information, records, and files.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Communicate quickly and effectively over email.
- Broad-based knowledge and experience in installing, lighting, and promoting art exhibitions.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively across departments.
- Ability to engage students and staff in a friendly, supportive, collaborative manner.
Preferred
- Previous work experience in a gallery setting or academic arts institution.
- Experience and familiarity with artists and arts organizations in Metro Vancouver.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and social media platforms.
- Experience in collections management and/or art handling.
