Course Description

Engage in an immersive week of learning in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Discover this community’s resilience, creativity, and sense of belonging while gaining an understanding of the challenges it faces. As you engage with local residents, First Nations leaders, practitioners, churches, and other organizations, you will apply a process of observation, participation, and reflection to come away with insights for a ministry of presence and solidarity.

Maximum enrollment: 16 credit students. No auditors.

Location: This course takes place off-site, in the downtown eastside neighbourhood of Vancouver, BC.

Special Registration Information:

Registration and Scholarships

Registration opens on February 14. All students will be waitlisted until shortly after March 13, 2024, upon which admission into the course is decided.

All students are welcome to register for this course. There are a limited number of tuition scholarships specific to this course, available for students in the MDiv and Applied Theology concentration of the MA, Theological Studies. Students must apply for a scholarship upon registration with the provided form in REGIS. Students who receive a scholarship will be notified alongside their admission into the course after March 13. These scholarships are only for tuition towards this course. Dropping the course will also result in forfeiting the scholarship.

If there are remaining spots in the course after March 13, students will be admitted on a first come, first serve basis, up to the course registration deadline of April 12, 2024.

Registration and Refund Deadlines

Because this course has a scholarship opportunity, and requires offsite planning, it has special registration deadlines. The last day to register for this course is Friday, April 12, 2024. The last day to drop the course for 100% tuition refund is midnight on Friday, April 12, 2024. The last day to drop the course for 50% tuition refund is midnight on Friday, May 10, 2024. No refunds will be provided after May 10, 2024, but the course may be dropped without refund until Friday, June 7, 2024.

Full payment is due by Friday, April 12, 2024. If registration and full payment are not received by Friday, April 12, 2024, you may be removed from the course and your spot may be given to the next person on the waitlist.

Note: Participation in this course requires completion of a liability form upon registration.
