Dr. Bruce Hindmarsh will be on Vancouver Island for the weekend of May 11–13, giving two lectures at L'Abri Fellowship, collectively titled “The Rise of Evangelicalism and Modernity: Views of Nature and Human Nature,” and participating in an alumni gathering in Victoria.

Friday, May 11

L'Abri, 6:00 pm—Join Bruce for a soup and salad dinner at 6:00 pm followed by a lecture at 7:00 pm at L'Abri Fellowship. You are invited (but not at all required!) to bring a food item to complement the meal. You may join in for the lecture even if you are not able to come in time for dinner. If you would like to attend either or both of these events, please RSVP to help L'Abri plan appropriately.

Bruce's first lecture, titled "Evangelicals and the Rise of Science," will explore some of the surprising ways that early evangelicals engaged with science, and how their spiritual concerns led them to see the world described by science as one in which God was still very much present.

Saturday, May 12

Victoria, 4:00 pm–6:30 pm—Alumni Anna Spray (MDiv '06) and Jacob Buurma (MDiv '07) will be hosting an alumni gathering at their home in Victoria. There will be fingerfood and light refreshments, and plenty of wonderful conversations! Please RSVP if you would like to attend this gathering. The address will be sent to those who RSVP.

Bruce's second lecture, titled "Evangelicals and the Rise of Natural Ethics," will explore how early evangelicals engaged with questions around human nature, and how they resisted their culture's impulse to separate ethics and morality from religion.

Special instructions for getting to L'Abri Fellowship: There no sign marking the L'Abri property, and it is nestled in the trees so can be easy to miss. Google Maps can be quite helpful in pinpointing the location. There is limited parking, so please park in an organized fashion to maximize the space, and consider carpooling.
