Humanness Lost and Recovered

an exploration of the revolt of the human spirit in the post-modern world, and the way toward recovery of humanness in contemporary society.

April 5, 2008

During the last half of the twentieth century western civilization has witnessed profound cultural changes, at the center of which has been significant loss of the eternal dimension of our existence as human beings. We find ourselves in a world driven by the need for self-fulfillment through the acquisition of and control over material goods. Rapid increase in technology has provided incredible means for communication and connectivity, and yet more and more people experience isolation and loneliness in their day to day lives. At the conference we will reflect on these changes with two scholars who have personally witnessed the impact of our increasingly secular society on the loss of our humanness. They will explore (and explode) the fallacies and follies generated by a human-centered hope for self-fulfillment in our lives on Earth, and offer a personal and corporate challenge to believers to embrace more fully a vision of new life in which Christ fills the whole horizon of our experience and by which we express our full humanity.

The Regent College Tradition Conference

Dear Friends,

The idea for the Regent Tradition Conference emerged out of our desire at Regent to move into the future without negating our past. Founded in 1970, Regent set forth to equip the next generation with a firm biblical foundation so that they might speak with integrity to an increasingly secular society. Inspired by this initial vision, Regent College continues to serve people who desire a more integrated worldview that embraces scholarship, practical training and Christian faith.

Central to this service is the involvement of faculty, both past and present, but this conference in particular seeks to honour different retired faculty for the spiritual legacy they have left behind.

For the 2008 Regent Tradition Conference, we are delighted to welcome Jim Houston and JI Packer as the featured speakers. Jim is the founding principal of Regent, a mentor to many and someone who has contributed significantly to the field of spiritual theology. JI has taught theology at Regent for many years, is the author of many books and has been instrumental in bringing theology to the laity. It is a great privilege to have these two servants of Christ with us in one conference.

We warmly invite all those who have appreciated the ministry of Jim and JI to come to Regent to sit under their teaching on the subject of Humanness Lost and Recovered. We believe that this sixth Regent Tradition Conference will not only honour our retired faculty, but will also provide a wonderful learning opportunity for the wider Christian community.

We hope you will join us for this special event,

Rod Wilson, President
