Marva DawnMarva Dawn

Christians Equipped for Ministry, Vancouver, WA

Internationally renowned theologian, author, and educator Dr. Marva J. Dawn has preached and taught at seminaries, universities, clergy and lay conferences, and churches throughout the world under the auspices of Christians Equipped for Ministry of Vancouver, WA. A scholar with four masters degrees MA (English, Idaho), MDiv (New Testament, Western Evangelical Seminary), ThM (Old Testament, Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary), MA (Ethics, Notre Dame) and a PhD in Christian Ethics and the Scriptures from the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Dawn is also the author of numerous articles and 20 books, several of which have received awards.

During the conference, Marva Dawn will take us into the struggle of being pray-ers in the broken world, leading us, as she is uniquely qualified to do, through four Psalms of Lament. She will help understand what lament is and is not, and how it is through such praying that we move from fear and despair to faith and hope.

Bruce HindmarshBruce Hindmarsh

James M. Houston Professor of Spiritual Theology, Regent College

Bruce Hindmarsh has a broad interest in the history of Christian spirituality and a particular research interest in evangelical spirituality. He has published and lectured widely on the early evangelical movement in the age of John Wesley and Jonathan Edwards, and he is the author of John Newton and the English Evangelical Tradition and The Evangelical Conversion Narrative. Bruce has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards, research grants and fellowships, including the Mayers Research Fellowship, the prestigious Henry Luce III Theological Fellowship for 2006-07 and a three-year research grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada for a new project on early evangelical spirituality.

We will begin each day with Bruce as he works with the tensions we pray-ers experience around the act of praying, the tension between Martha and Mary, the “mixed-life,” as he calls it, of both contemplation and activity, looking to three very busy pastors of the past: Bernard of Clairvaux, Teresa of Avila and Richard Baxter.

Marva DawnDarrell Johnson

Associate Professor, Pastoral Theology, Regent College

Darrell’s nearly 30 years of pastoral ministry have taken him into several Presbyterian churches in California, and as far as Manila, Philippines. His sermons delivered during the “People Power Revolution” have been broadcast throughout Asia by the Far East Broadcasting Company. He has taught at Fuller Theological Seminary in the Doctor of Ministry program as well as served as the Seminary’s Chapel Director. Darrell is convinced that the world is changed, primarily, through the preaching of the word, and therefore focuses his teaching at Regent on expository preaching. He also teaches in the areas of biblical spirituality, worship and prayer. He has authored Experiencing the Trinity, Fifty-seven Words That Changed the World: A Journey Through the Lord’s Prayer, and Discipleship on the Edge: An Exposition of the Book of Revelation. He is working on a book on preaching entitled Standing In The Mystery.

Darrell Johnson will walk us through a three-part exposition of John 17, wherein Jesus the Great Pray-er most fully opens his heart to his Father, intentionally doing so in our hearing so that we might enter into his praying. John 17 leads us into “The Conversation at the Centre of the Universe.” Darrell will also serve as the Conference Pastor, suggesting ways we can respond to what the Holy Spirit is doing for and among us as we worship, listen, study, pray and interact together.

Marva DawnAndrea Tisher

Music & Worship Coordinator, Regent College

Andrea is a gifted vocalist and composer who beautifully combines her musical training from Seattle Pacific University (BA, Music) with the theological grounding of her current work toward a Masters in Christian Studies at Regent. She also teaches private music students and enjoys singing with Abendmusik, a local choir. Andrea enjoys the beauty of living on the West Coast and is happy to be making her home here with her husband Gordon. Andrea returns to lead us in worship, helping us move into fresh places where we can be the prayers we were made and are being redeemed to be.
