Music in Ministry: An Historical Overview

This course is also offered as HIST 504

From the beginnings of Christianity, music has been an important component of ministry—ministry to God, ministry to God’s people, and ministry to the world. This course will trace how music served the life of the church from its origins until now, demonstrating how theological concepts fostered new developments in musical expression, which in turn had applications beyond music into the broader worlds of culture and science. There will be an emphasis on primary sources and direct experience of the music through listening and singing. The aim of the course is to foster a deeper appreciation of the impact of Christian music, and to inspire creativity in music ministry.
