Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy holds a vision for a covenanted community living under Yahweh’s rule. It doesn’t so much address the individual, as hold out a vision for society—Deuteronomy shows that God, in Christ, stakes claim to every part of culture. It doesn’t merely challenge social injustice (though it does that), but brings the whole of human life within the scope of the covenant life. As God’s people learn to love Yahweh her God, embracing God’s life-giving rule expressed in the law, they will live together as kindred—family—a shared life characterised by thanksgiving, joy, justice and generosity.

Through workshops and discussion, uncover how ancient Israel was nourished to live as a contrastive community of justice and love in the sight of the nations surrounding them. Engage in close readings of the text in order to understand the character of Israelite law, the nature of God’s covenant, and the character of God. Consider how we ourselves can read Deuteronomy as people who are called to mission, and tease out the many implications of the book of Deuteronomy for worshipping communities and for society today. We will ask: what does biblical law teach us about seeking justice? What practices can we glean from Deuteronomy that may form and sustain communities defined by mission?
