Art Exhibitions & Concerts
The Lookout Gallery was established seventeen years ago. We have shown paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, calligraphy, etc. There have been solo and group exhibitions, showing artists from as close to home as Vancouver and as far away as Australia and Russia. There will be two exhibitions opening during Spring and Summer Schools: one on May 7 and the other on July 2.
Once a week during Summer School, at lunchtime, a free musical concert will add to the Regent experience. The musical styles range from classical to folk to jazz.
Evening Public Lectures
On Wednesday evenings during Spring School, and each Monday and Wednesday evening during Summer School, Regent College will present a free public lecture from 8:00–9:30 pm. To receive the Spring Evening Public Lecture poster (available in April), or the Summer Evening Public Lecture poster (available in May), please indicate on the Request for Information Form (on the coloured insert) or check our Events section.
Chapels
Regent College desires to be a place of prayer as well as a place of study. For many students over the years, chapel has been not a reluctant add-on but a daily highlight. The mingling of testimony and praise, exposition and intercession, creates an atmosphere of rich spiritual vitality.
Spring School Chapels will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 11:10 to 11:50 am. Summer School Chapels will be held everyday from 11:15 to 11:45 am.
Prayer Retreats
To provide an opportunity for students to reflect prayerfully on things learned at Spring and Summer Schools and to create space to deal with personal issues, two all-day guided prayer retreats will be planned, one on Saturday, May 17 led by Paul Stevens and the other on Saturday, July 5th, led by James Houston, at a location nearby to the campus and to areas suitable for walks and quiet meditation. Each day will blend elements of teaching, corporate prayer and time for silent reflection. Space will be limited, so register early to avoid disappointment.
SPRING SCHOOL ONLY (May 12—June 13)
Coffee and Dialogue – On Tuesday mornings from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm there will be opportunity for students and visitors to meet and converse with Spring School faculty members in an informal discussion format.
Roundtable Discussions - Each Wednesday from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm Regent hosts an open discussion between faculty/visiting sessionals and students. All are welcome to join in.
SUMMER SCHOOL ONLY (June 30—August 1)
Tea on the Lawn – This event gives students the opportunity to interact personally with a few of the summer faculty. Over tea and cookies, students will be able to hear faculty speak about themselves and their work, and interact with them in a small group setting after afternoon classes.
Postmodern Urban Spaces: A City Tour
David Ley, Professor of Urban Geography at UBC, will take us through Vancouver’s downtown and inner-city districts on a chartered bus, and will emphasize the changing social values of postmodern culture as these are expressed and reproduced in the urban landscape. He will illustrate various views and challenges of the postmodern city.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to read cities by their urban landscape, using Vancouver as a model. The concepts of postmodernity and pluralism will be given concrete form as we study the development of various urban spaces. This will all be done with the purpose of gaining more relevance in our understanding of the city as a mission field.
Date and time: Saturday, July 5, 9:30 am–1:00 pm. Cost does not include lunch, however a snack will be provided. Space is limited, so register early to avoid disappointment. |
