Anglican Studies Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be admitted to the "program" in
order
to take a course in Anglican studies?
No. Any Regent College student can take any course offered by
the program.
Will I be able to be ordained after my training at Regent?
No, at least not unless you find a bishop who is willing to
ordain you! The power to ordain is in the hands of individual
bishops, so if you are hoping to be ordained following your time
at Regent you need to be sure that your local diocesan bishop
thinks that you are someone suitable for ordination. There is
a process of discernment which your diocese will expect you to
go through before you are considered a "postulant," that
is, someone who is approved to go forward as a candidate for
ordination.
How can I find out more about Wycliffe Hall?
The easiest way is to view their website. The address is: http://www.wycliffe.ox.ac.uk
Another
way is to write to them and request a copy of their prospectus.
Their mailing address is: Wycliffe Hall, 54 Banbury
Road, Oxford, England OX2 6PW
The Wycliffe telephone number (from
North America) is: 011-441-865-274-200.
If
I want to apply to do part of my studies at
Wycliffe Hall,
what do I need to do?
Students interested in going to Wycliffe
should write a letter to Dr. Donald Lewis, Secretary of the
Anglican Studies Program,
indicating their interest and when they would like to attend
Wycliffe. Such requests are evaluated by the Anglican Studies
committee at Regent. Please note that Wycliffe Hall is primarily
interested in training students who are planning on being
ordained in the Anglican communion.
Are there any special requirements
for attending Wycliffe Hall?
Yes.
Students applying to study at Wycliffe Hall have to meet the
academic entrance requirements of Oxford University which
are different from the admissions requirements at Regent
College. Students interested in applying to do part of their
studies
at Wycliffe Hall must apply to do so through the Anglican
Studies committee at Regent.
If I were to study at Wycliffe Hall,
when would I go?
The Wycliffe terms are ten weeks long. The
first term begins about the last week of September and runs
through to early
December. The second term begins about the middle of January
through to late March.
How expensive would it be to study
at Wycliffe Hall?
You will need to contact Wycliffe Hall about
their fees, but generally the costs are comparable at the two
institutions.
Can I go to study at Wycliffe for one term?
Normally Regent students
attend Wycliffe for two consecutive terms as Wycliffe's courses
run over the two terms. Unlike
Regent, Wycliffe does not operate on a standard semester system.
What
about visas? Do I need a special visa to study in the UK?
Generally
not, but you should check with the nearest British embassy.
Students from Commonwealth countries normally do not
need visas to study in Britain but do need to be able to present
a letter of acceptance from the British school they plan to
attend (which Wycliffe would provide you with) and need also
to demonstrate
financial solvency.
How does my work at Wycliffe apply to my
Regent transcript?
Students on the exchange register at Wycliffe
as Regent students and course work done there will appear on
Regent transcripts
as transfer courses from Wycliffe. The faculty at Wycliffe
evaluate work done there based on Regent's stated grading standard.
Exchange students at Wycliffe are not technically "members" of
the University of Oxford. (However, although not "members," exchange
students can attend lectures offered by the University of Oxford,
have access to the University Library and students clubs in
the University.)
Is there flexibility in what I will take at
Wycliffe?
Wycliffe has a set curriculum designed for students
preparing for the ordained Anglican ministry. It is expected
that Regent
exchange students will take the normally prescribed courses
which will correspond to Regent M.Div. offerings.
If I go
to Wycliffe, are there opportunities for ministry in Oxford?
Regent
students attending Wycliffe have found that there are great
opportunities for practical ministry experience church
missions, preaching in local churches and in college, church
placements, leading morning and evening prayer, organizing
worship services and participating in the community life at Wycliffe
Hall.
What is community life like at Wycliffe?
Community life occurs
in a residential community which intensifies the experience
of community. Community groups meet three times
a week once for Bible study and twice for prayer. Chapel attendance
is compulsory for morning prayer.
I want to do a Master of Christian
Studies at Regent. Can I do some of my course work at Wycliffe
Hall?
Generally speaking, no. Because Wycliffe's ministry is
primarily geared to preparing Anglican ordinands, students
desiring to
do an MCS will not find the Wycliffe program suitable to their
needs.
I am doing a ThM at Regent College. How can I take advantage
of the Anglican Studies program?
ThM students are free to
take any of the Anglican Studies core courses among their electives
and can do a thesis in Anglican
theology or history, or in an area related to Anglican studies.
If
I were to do a Master of Divinity at Regent College,
which
courses could I do at Wycliffe Hall?
Under the Master of Divinity
requirements as outlined in the College Catalogue, one could
do the following courses in the
required area at Wycliffe: Biblical Theology (BIBL 680); Pastoral
Ethics (THEO 630); Supervised Ministry I (APPL 693); History
of Christianity I (HIST 500); History of Christianity II (HIST
501); Systematic Theology A (THEO 605); Systematic Theology
B (THEO 606); and Systematic Theology C (THEO 607).
In the "Required Areas" one
could do a Biblical Studies Seminar (NT, OT or Biblical Seminar)
and two courses in Interdisciplinary
Studies.
In the elective area, one could do courses in Anglican
Life and Polity, Anglican History, and Anglican Theology, if
they
are being offered.
In addition, one could fulfil elective requirements
at Wycliffe Hall.
Specific details of which courses a student
should do and when and where they should be done, should be
worked out with Mr.
Greg Cowley, Regent
College's Registrar.
The program is
directed at Wycliffe Hall by Dr. Graham Tomlin; at Regent
College by Dr. J. I. Packer. Chaplain for the Anglican
Studies Program at Regent is the Rev. Dr. Neil Mancor,
Rector.
