Sarah C. Williams

Sarah WilliamsAssociate Professor, Church History
BA, MA, DPhil (Oxford)

Sarah Williams joined the faculty in August 2005. A specialist in the field of nineteenth- and twentieth-century popular religion, she is the author of Religious Belief and Popular Culture. She has also written a number of articles and reviews for academic journals such as Past and Present, and The Journal of Nineteenth Century Studies and has contributed to European Religion in the Age of Great Cities (Hugh McLeod ed.). More recently she has written The Shaming of the Strong, a personal and theological reflection on the nature of personhood and the ethics of pre-natal testing. Sarah is currently working on a book entitled Redefining Christian Britain: Post 1945 Perspectives. Prior to coming to Regent, Sarah held the positions of research Fellow (University of Birmingham), Fellow and Tutor (Harris Manchester College, Oxford) and Prealector (Lincoln College, Oxford). Sarah’s research interests focus on the relationship between religion and culture and she has sought to pioneer new approaches to historical methodology that break down the barriers between disciplines and work towards a thoroughly integrated approach to the study of modern religiosity. Sarah is married to Paul, also a Regent faculty member, and has two daughters.
